Do you have the desire to be a digital photographer? That’s part of what it takes. Beyond that, where do you start? You will need to become familiar with a few things. First of course is the Digital Camera. It’s the tool that it all begins with. If you can’t get along with it, you might not want to get into digital photography. They have many functions and to make the most of them you need to familiarize with them. To do well in the photography business in general, you need to build a productive network.
It used to be a digital camera was very expensive. However, these days, they have come down considerably, while there capabilities have gone forward in leaps and bounds. Still the cheaper they are, the lower their resolution (quality of the pictures). Most of them that you would want to use have a miniature LCD screen that enables you to view your photographs right after taking them, making it easy to delete those that aren’t up to the standard you want of them.
Resolution is one of the most important things. The higher it is the larger the photos you can take. Quality photos that are clear require high resolution. This is one area you won’t be able to skimp on when selecting your digital camera. Anything under 4 million pixel will probably not suit you.
You will also need to know the hardware interface to your computer as well as the software on the computer that enables you to access the camera. In the camera, you will want plenty of Memory Cards too. Those that are at least 32 Megabytes are advisable as in many cases they will be capable of holding over 100 high resolution photos. They could be looked at as reusable film. With the screen on the camera, you can also delete images that you don’t want and take new ones. On the computer you will also need plenty of hard drive space, as in the end, you will download the pictures from the camera to the hard drive.
Once you have the camera, computer, software you will also need a good quality color printer. Cheaper ones will wear out quickly. One other thing you want in a printer, is one that is capable of photo quality images. You will probably need photo quality ink cartridges, as well as photo paper for sure to print quality photos.
While there are many image editing programs out there, one of the most commonly used ones out there is Adobe Photoshop. For good reason, it has the ability to do nearly anything to images, and can work with nearly any resolution.
So if you are going to get into photography, you are going to need a number of things. A lot of the items are very similar to conventional photography. These include lighting, tripod(s), case and special lenses (also available for digital cameras). From the digital side, you will also need cabling to connect the camera to the computer to download the imagery, and good practice using your image editing software.
After you have it all together, you will need to understand a little bit more on the resolution too. Studying the manual for the camera you choose will explain a lot of this. It might also help in it’s selection, as most manuals for these can be found online without even owning the camera yet. Check the manufacturer’s website. Look for more on pixels, bit depth, resolution, and f-stops.
The biggest difference between digital and conventional cameras, is that the digital has some editing features, and that the image is stored in memory instead of imprinted on film as a negative. These cameras still need light to take pictures by, but also often feature brightness and contrast adjustment to enhance the photo.
With this, you have a checklist of what to look for, and a start towards starting your own digital photography business. Study on, and good luck to you.
